Canvas
As a University of Washington Instructor, you will manage your Coaching Companion assignments through the Canvas Learning System. When your course is created, it will be populated with a set of Coaching Companion assignments that have been designed to meet specific learning objectives for each course. The assignments are fully integrated into Canvas, so for a standard course you will not need to use the underlying Coaching Companion management tools. If you do want to add new or edit existing assignments, this guide has instructions to help.
How to use Canvas
Canvas has a rich set of user guides which you can use to learn how to navigate the Canvas environment.
Manage Your Account
You will use your UW NetID account to log into Canvas. If you are having any issues with your NetID account, refer to the UW NetID account page or call the UW-IT Service Center at 206-221-5000.
How to login to Canvas
- Navigate to the UW Canvas URL: https://canvas.uw.edu/.
- Click the Login button.

- Enter your UW NetID and password.

- Click the Sign in button.
How to edit account information in Canvas
- Click on the Account option in the left menu.
- You can use the Canvas Account panel to change account settings, such as your name and how you want to receive notifications.

How to logout of Canvas
- Click on the Account option in the left menu.
- Click the Logout button.

How to login to Coaching Companion
There are some optional management tasks, such as adding a new assignment, that will require you to sign into the Coaching Companion platform.
- Navigate to the Coaching Companion™ login page.
- Login to the Coaching Companion using your UW NetID.
- You will see the Courses page, which lists all of your active courses.

Manage Courses
How to view a course
- Login to Canvas.
- From the Canvas Dashboard, click on the tile with the correct Course ID.

- The Course page shows all topics related to the course.

How to edit course Information
- Open the course you want to edit.
- Click the Settings button in the Course menu.

- Update the Course settings.
- Click the Update Course Details button at the bottom of the page.
Manage Assignments
How to open an assignment
- Open the Course.
- Click on the Assignments link in the left menu to see a list of assignments associated with the course.


How to edit assignment settings
- Open the assignment.
- Click the Edit Assignment Settings button on the top right.

- Update assignment details.
- Note that any text entered in the HTML editor will appear at the top of the assignment page. You can add instructions and a grading rubric in this field if you choose.

- Click the Save button at the bottom of the page.
How to add instructions and grading rubric to an assignment
You have two different options to add instructions and grading rubric information to an assignment.
Canvas
You can add instructions/rubric by editing the Canvas assignment settings, in which case the instructions/rubric will show up on the assignment page before the Coaching Companion Assignment tab. You can also use the Canvas Rubric tool to build a more complex Rubric.

Coaching Companion
You can also add instructions/grading rubic in the Coaching Companion, in which case they will appear in the Instructions and/or Grading Rubric tab next to the Assignment tab.

- Login to the Coaching Companion.
- Click the correct course bar on the home page.
- Click the View/Configure button next to the correct assignment.

- Click the Edit Content button under the main menu.

- Click the Edit Assignment bar.

- Update the Instructions or Grading Rubric field(s) in the form.
- If you do not include information in these fields, the corresponding tab(s) will not display on the assignment.
- Note that the other fields in this form are only applicable to an assignment displayed in the Coaching Companion. To update any other details, follow instructions to update the assignment details in Canvas
- Click the Update button.
How to create a new assignment
Creating a new assignment requires steps in both Canvas and Coaching Companion.
Canvas
- Open the assignments page for your course in Canvas.
- At the top of the assignments list, click on the blue Assignment button.

- Enter details for the assignment

- Choose External Tool for Submission Type.

- Follow the next set of instructions to create the assignment in Coaching Companion. The last step will show you where to find the assignment URL to enter into the External Tool URL field.
Coaching Companion
- Login to the Coaching Companion.
- Click the correct course bar on the home page.

- Click the Assignments tab.
- Click the Create Assignment bar.
- You will see a list of the available assignment types. You can use the following graphic and descriptions to choose which assignment type you’d like to add.
- Reflection – allows instructors to upload a video and then have students reflect on the action in the video. Use this option to have students comment on a video that you will provide.
- Student Play-by-Play – allows instructor to upload a video, and the student to use Play-By-Play to tag the video with interaction categories. Use this option to upload a video that your students will tag with interactions.
- Multiple Choice – allows instructors to upload a video and configure multiple choice questions for students to answer. Use this option to assign a multiple-choice exercise based on a video you have uploaded.
- Baseline – allows the student to capture themselves interacting with one or more young learners and is filmed at the beginning of the quarter / course / program. This baseline video allows students to re-watch and reflect as they learn new strategies and skills.
- Upload and Reflection – allows student to upload a video and provide a brief annotation / commentary. The instructor may also comment on this video.
- Reflection with Play-by-Play – allows student to upload a video, and the instructor to use Play-By-Play to tag interaction categories with additional comments.
- Goal Tender – allows students to identify and map / tag goals and learning outcomes such as the Learning Outcomes Framework to video footage of an activity.
- Lesson Plan – allows students to create, implement and reflect on a lesson plan. They will upload a document for their lesson plan, upload a video for their implementation, and then upload a document for their reflection.
- Community Reflection – allows the instructor to create Community of Reflection and Practice (CORP) groups of students to upload their own videos, watch their CORP group videos and comment on CORP member videos.
- Click the bar for the type of assignment you want to add.
- Note that the title bar for the assignment expands down. If you would like to close this assignment without saving it, scroll down and click on the title bar again.

- Enter the assignment information: Assignment Name, Instructions, Grading Rubric, Open Date, Due Date, Close Date, Points.
- Click the Create button at the bottom of the form.
- Follow steps 1-3 to return to the assignments page.

- Click the Link button next to the assignment you just created. Copy the displayed URL to your clipboard (CTRL-C for PC, CMD-C for Mac).

- Return to Canvas to add this URL.
Canvas
- Open the assignment details in Canvas.
- Scroll down to the Submission Type area.
- Enter the assignment URL from Coaching Companion into the External Tool URL field.

- When you are finished entering the assignment details, click the Save or Save & Publish button.

How to delete an assignment
- Open the course assignment page in Canvas
- Click the more (three dots) icon next to the assignment you would like to delete
- Select the Delete icon in the drop-down menu

- Confirm you want to delete in the browser message box (this will have a distinct appearance depending on your device and browser)

How to add video to an assignment
- If your video is over 500 MB, follow the instructions to Compress Your Video before uploading to EarlyEdU Coaching Companion™.
- Open the assignment that you would like to add video to.
- Click the Add New Media bar.

- Click the Choose File button and then choose a video from the file manager (this will look different depending on the device from which you are uploading a video). Click the OK (or other browser specific) button to close the file manager.
- Enter a title for the video in the text box.
- Click Upload. A progress bar will show the status of the video upload.

- After uploading, the video will be encoded (the process may take up to an hour.) During this time, do not close the browser window. It is important to verify that the video has encoded before closing the browser completely.

- Review the file when the encoding is completed.
- Rotate the image, if necessary, by clicking the Rotate button.
How to delete a video from an assignment
- Open the assignment from which you want to delete the video.
- Click the edit (pencil) icon at the top left of the video.

- Click the Delete button at the bottom right of the form.
Manage Comments
How to add comments to a video
- Open the assignment that contains the video to which you want to add comments.
- To add a timestamped comment, click directly on the video at the time you want to add the comment. The video will pause and display the comments form.

- Enter your comment and then click the Save Comment button.
- To enter a general comment, scroll below the video and click the Add Comments bar.
- Enter your comment in the form that appears and then click the Save Comment button.
How to read comments in an assignment
- Open the assignment where you'd like to review comments.
- Scroll past the video to see all comments added to the video.
- Comments that are linked to a time in the video will display a timestamp. Click on the timestamp to start the video at the correlating time.

- When the video is first displayed, there is a refresh icon at the bottom.
Click this icon to display the options to Reply | Edit | Delete.

- Click Reply to add a comment to an existing comment.
- Click Edit to change the text of your comment.
- Click Delete to delete your comment.
How to view Play-by-Play comments
Play-by-Play assignments allow you to tag a student’s video with discrete tags know as Interactions. This is a quick way for you to provide feedback on specific actions or attributes in the video. A Play-by-Play Interaction shows up in the comments area, however it has a different look than a generic comment. The Interaction will be tagged with a word or a phrase that you are looking for in a student’s video, as well as an associated color.
- Add interactions to a Play-by-Play assignment.
- Open the assignment and scroll to comment area. Note the interactions you’ve added to the student’s video.

- Click on the timestamp to open the video to the point that you tagged with this interaction.
Manage Grading
How to enter/edit a student grade for an assignment.
- Open the assignment that you want to grade.
- Click the Speed Grader button in the top right

- Speed Grader will load the assignment for the first student in your course list.
- The student’s submission for the assignment loads into the left panel. View the student’s submission, including uploaded video and/or comments.
- Enter the grade details in the panel on the right.

- Click the Submit button
- Click the dropdown arrow next to the student name to choose a different student. Students with a yellow dot next to their names have submitted this assignment.

How to grade CORP Groups assignments
- Open the CORPS Group assignment for the student you want to grade using the Speed Grader.
- Watch the student video and read the comments added by other members of the CORP group.
- Note that you can access the rest of the CORP group videos by clicking on the name bars at the bottom of the page. Students who have submitted videos will have a dot displayed after their name.

- You can add comments to each student video.
- Enter a grade for the student

How to create a Multiple Choice assignment
- Follow the instructions to create an assignment, and select the Multiple Choice Assignment
How to add multiple choice questions to a video
- Create a Multiple Choice assignment
- Follow the Instructions to add a video to the assignment
- Open the assignment you just created.
- Click the Add bar under the video to start adding questions.
- Note that the video must be uploaded and encoding must be completed to be able to add questions.

- Select the time for the video to pause and Instruction Text to display by sliding the left Timestamp Range slider to the correct time.

You can hover over the progress bar at the bottom of the video to see what the time is at any point in the video.

- Write instructions that will display to the user in the Instruction Text
- Select time for the question to appear on screen by sliding the right Timestamp Range slider to the correct time.

- Add text for the question into the Question Text field.
- Add text for your first answer into the the Answer Options area. Click the + More Options button to add more answer choices.
- Click on the radio button next to the correct answer.

- Click the Add button at the bottom of the field to save your question and answers.
Manage a Play-by-Play Assignment
How to create a Play-by-Play assignment
- Follow the instructions to create an assignment, and select the Play-By-Play Assignment
How to add interactions to a Play-by-Play assignment
- Open the assignment to which you want to add Play-by-Play interactions
- Click the Create A New Interaction bar.

- Click on the colored area in the Color field and then select a color from the color wheel for the interaction.
- Enter text for the interaction into the Interaction field.
- Click the Add button.
- Create and add additional interactions one at a time by following steps 2-5 for each interaction on the same assignment.
How to edit an interaction in a Play-by-Play assignment
- Open the assignment in which you want to edit Play-By-Play interactions.
- Click on the pencil icon next to the interaction you want to edit.

- Change the color or text of the interaction.
- Click the Update button.
How to copy interactions from another Play-by-Play assignment
- Follow the instructions to create an assignment, and select the Play-By-Play Assignment type
- Open the assignment into which you want to copy Play-By-Play interactions.
- Click the Copy Play By Play From Another Assignment bar – note this option will not display if you have already added interactions this this assignment.

- Choose the assignment from which you’d like to copy the interactions

- Click the Copy button
How to use interactions to annotate a student's Play-by-Play assignment
- Open the Play-by-Play assignment where you want to add interactions.
- Open the Speed Grader and use the student drop-down in the top right to select the student.
- Play the student’s video, and then click on the video at the time where an interaction should take place.
- Click on the correct interaction from the options that appear or leave a timestamped comment.

- Add multiple interactions by repeating steps 3 & 4.
Manage Community Reflection Assignments
How to create a Community Reflection assignment
- Follow the instructions to create an assignment, and select the Community Reflection Assignment.
How to create a CORP group for an assignment
- Open the Community Reflection assignment for which you want to create a CORP group.
- Click the Create New Community of Reflection and Practice bar.

- Choose students by drag-and-dropping their names from the Available Students text box to the Selected Students box.

- Enter a name for the Community Practice and Reflection Group.
- Click the Create button.
How to add a person to a CORP group
- Open the Community Reflection assignment to which you want to add a student to a CORP group.
- Click the Edit button next to the correct CORP group.

- Drag-and-drop student names from the Available Students box on the form to the Selected Students box.

- Click the Update button.
How to copy CORP groups from another assignment
- Follow the instructions to create a Community Reflection Assignment
- Open the Community Reflection assignment to which you want to copy CORP groups.
- Click the Copy CORPS Groups From Another Assignment bar.
- Note that this option will only display if there are no CORPS groups created for this assignment.

- Choose the assignment from the drop-down list from which to copy the CORP groups. All CORP groups from the selected assignment will be copied over to the current assignment.

- Click the Copy button.
How to delete people from a CORP group
- Open the Community Reflection assignment that contains the CORP group.
- Click the Edit button next to the correct group.

- Click the “X” by the student's name in the box.

- Click the Update button.

How to compress a video
Video files over 500 MB must be compressed before uploading to the EarlyEdU Coaching Companion™.
We suggest using Handbrake to compress video files.
